Crop Production

 Agricultural activities especially crop farming is the backbone of the household economy whereby about 70% of the population depends on it as their main occupation. Major crops grown are categorized as food crops (paddy, maize, cassava, bananas, sweet potatoes, legumes, vegetables, and fruits) and cash crops (simsim, coconut and sun flower). Most of farmers undertake agricultural production within the area and outside exploiting agricultural potentials in neighboring areas/districts such as Ulanga and Kilombero.

 Although it is subsistence, commercialization of agricultural produce particularly food crops has been taking place in order to meet social and economic needs.

The available arable land is about 38,149 ha of which 23,587.3 ha is cultivated. The potential area for irrigation is 540 Ha. of which 170 Ha is irrigated mostly by traditional method.
